The Girls of the Gull
sound walk Nienke Rooijakkers and Evelien van den Broek
The Girls of the Gull is a unique work of art in public space that you can walk. You will follow a route along the IJ, and by the IJplein Vogelbuurt. You walk in audio player and headphones. After about 70 minutes you are back at the starting point and talk about what you just experienced. Led by Chris Keulemans.
Every Wednesday is Girls Club community center in The Seagull. Nienke Rooijakkers bombed the girls into mini-reporters of their own lives. Dreams, reflections and practical life lessons are sequential while the neighborhood is around. The sound of Evelien van den Broek zooms in on past and present of the neighborhood. A docu-soundscape on a working class area of history - where life is not always plain sailing, but there are enormous resilience.
The Girls of the Gull is part of City Soundtrack, a new platform for art audio walks. Recently a first series of walks realized in Amsterdam: Eastern Docklands Zuidas Osdorp IJburg, Amsterdam-Noord, Nieuwmarktbuurt, Staatsliedenbuurt and along the Amstel.
