Workshop:

Aquaponics at the Innovative Citizen

27 sep 2014
1 okt 2014

Innovative Citizen is a festival about new urban skills with numerous workshops, performances, installations, lectures, parties and concerts. The Mediamatic aquaponics team is traveling to Dortmund to be part of their workshop program.

In this workshop you learn how to create a sustainable food production system that combines the cultivations of vegetables and fish: Aquaponics. This might be the best way to produce food in the city, because it hardly takes up any space. If you'd like to learn how to build an aquaponics system, join us for this hands-on workshop.

Aquaponics

The Aquaponic Gardening Community describes aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer." The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is currently building an urban oasis based on this ecofriendly system.

We start the day with a thorough introduction to aquaponics and a crash course in biology. After that, with our trainers' help, you will learn how to build a small scale aquaponics farm from scratch. No matter which scale you build, the technique is universal. By the end of the day you will know exactly how to build your own system at home, and know everything about the ecosystem. A crash course in biology, plumbing and carpentry.
