Art + Distillation

Odorama 09 - with Klara Ravat, Zeger Reyers, Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands & Saskia Hoogendoorn

8 Sep 2016

Smell connects us to our surroundings. Every country, every city, every street, every home has its own scent, but how to catch it? An image is captured by taking a photograph but it is very difficult to isolate scent from its original context. For this edition of Odorama we invited artists Klara Ravat (ES), Zeger Reyers (NL) and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands & Saskia Hoogendoorn from Eau d’Amsterdam to introduce us to the art of distillation and how to capture your scented surroundings.

Klara Ravat -

SmellSCAPES performance + presentation

Klara Ravat creates media and odour artworks, installations and experimental films. For the past years she has been developing works that relate to the sense of smell as a research on how we perceive through this sense. Ravat joined Mediamatic for a 10- day artist in recidency in which she investigated the olfactory characteristics of our city. The resulting performance: SmellSCAPES will be an interactive and intimate trip through the scent of Amsterdam, where the audience will be guided to experiment and sense the scented landscape. After the performance there will be time for reflection and discussion with the artist. Klara will also share the results of her workshop The Scent of Amsterdam, and present her latest project: the Smell Lab in Berlin. A meetup and artist collective which experiments and works collectively on the art and science of scent.

Zeger Reyers

Decomposing smell via (live) distillation + Q&A

The works of Dutch installation artist Zeger Reyers confronts the artificial, man-made world with nature. In determining both synthetic and natural materials, Zeger uses his sense of smell as guidance. Ten years ago this let him to create a scent cabinet of all the smells he found in nature. For him mundane tasks like mowing the lawn can easily turn into an exploration of the symphony of olfactory experiences; every cut stem of every different plant and flower transforms the air into a local perfume. This decomposition of smells is central to the art of distillation. While distilling an aromatic substance the used matter disintegrates into different odourant components. Zeger is well experienced in this technique and will demonstrate the process of distillation with a site specific scented substance.

Presenting Eau d' Amsterdam

A good perfume takes you to another time and place. With Eau d’Amsterdam Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands and Saskia Hoogendoorn, from creative studio Tijdmakers, bring you to the canals of Amsterdam. Where the elm trees blossom in springtime, spreading their seeds as natural confetti. The duo was amazed with this reoccurring natural phenomenon and decided to create the first ever green perfume from the historical centre of Amsterdam: World Heritage in a Bottle.
