Performance by Yuka Kawabe

Ongoing Series in Museum De Paviljoens

15 May 2003

The exhibition Black My Story shows work by international artists Jimmie Durham, Remy Jungerman, Samson Kambalu, Shirana Shahbazi, and Chikako Watanabe. During the guided tour, Japanese singer Yuka Kawabe will sing Dutch songs. These songs originate from the island Schokland in the Noordoostpolder. Schokker lady Jannie Rieff has taught Yuka Kawabe the songs during the last few weeks. This will be an exceptional occasion to hear Yuka Kawabe sing these songs in Museum De Paviljoens.

The title Black My Story refers to a series of photos by Samson Kambalu, in which he shows garbage bags in the streets of Amsterdam. He labeled these bags: Black My Story. The exhibition Black My Story shows art by five artists whose cultural background forms the basis for their work. Black My Story discusses conceptualization of nationality, religion, race, and ethnicity. With new installations, loans, and artworks from The Almere Collection, the exhibition rather shows the complexity of each individual.
