The Haeckel Project

As some of you might have already noticed, reaching our location became a bit of an adventure due to construction works near Oosterdok. Yet, we are not isolated on our island, but there are still several ways to reach us, see here. In addition, the collaboration with neighbouring institutions draws our area more together than ever. Ernst Haeckel, an evolutionary biologist and "the German Darwin" is the inspiration for us. Science, Innovation, and Art are attributes that stand not only for Haeckel’s oeuvre but also describe the collaboration of Expeditie Oosterdok and hence Mediamatic.

Oosterdok is located in the heart of Amsterdam – where for centuries innovation has gone hand in hand with an urge for adventure. A passion for exploration and creativity are in the district’s DNA. Mediamatic is among 10 other institutions who together form a collaboration to enhance the prominence of this area. Since February 2017, these joined forces build the partnership of Expeditie Oosterdok. By working together, we aim to deliver a strong, comprehensive programme of events tailored to our location. We don’t shy away from experiment. In contrast, our collaborative programming of projects means that Oosterdok is known as the place for discovery, innovation, and internationalisation, where everyone is welcome.

Ernst Haeckel is an inspiration to us. In the past, Mediamatic already expressed the admiration with programs around Haeckel as an evolutionary biologist as well as gifted draughtsman and painter. You can read about it here. The visualisations around Haeckel’s work connect scientific research with artistic expression. This mindset is what triggers the Haeckel-Project in bringing together all kinds of cultural institutions within the Oosterdok region. Haeckel’s iconic illustrations serve as symbols for Expeditie Oosterdok’s mission to raise cultural and scientific collaboration and to push the significance of the Oosterdok-area in Amsterdam.

Starting from April, Mediamatic together with our partners of Expeditie Oosterdok will jointly introduce an all-inclusive programme of projects with discovery at its core.

Save the date: On April 21st, Mediamatic will host an OpenDay with a program around Ernst Haeckel, Expeditie Oosterdok and Discovery.

Till then, keep exploring the way to Mediamatic and the Oosterdok islands.
