Workshop:

Designing Incense

with Niklaus Mettler

2 okt 2021

Incense is an ancient form of perfumery and has in many cultures different shapes, purposes and functions. It is used as a time measurement, as an insect repellent or it serves as a portal to connect with the divine.

In this workshop, you will get in touch with many different aroma materials, and learn how to develop your own incense from scratch.

Smell can take you back in time -

What you will do

This workshop is generally based on the Japanese Incense technique (which includes forms of ‘loose’ incense and sticks and cones) but leaves space for your own personal curiosity and will for experimentation.

Niklaus will first present particular forms of incense burning and a range of ingredients used in traditional incense-making. He will also delve into less common and more local materials. You will then get to compose your own aromatic incense recipe.

There will be a range of materials that you can use in the workshop, but we invite participants to bring materials that will help to create their personal blend. This can be gums, woods, flowers, spices, fruit-zest or anything that carries an interesting smell for you. Note: the materials you bring have to be completely dry in order use them in your blend.
