I really enjoy the contemporary art here in Berlin and have lived here long enough and well enough to know where to find the best music, atmosphere, food, concerts, etc. Having been a tour guide, I also have a bit of background knowledge of the history, architecture and, of course, culture of Berlin.
About Berlin
It has been said that Berlin is "a city condemned always to become, never to be". In a way, this is true: constantly re-inventing itself, open to creative minds and welcoming to uncommon ideas. Day by day, new things and ideas are created and discussed in public areas and within communities. Layers of history pave the city while innovative people reconstruct the meaning of work and pleasure.
Having gone through so many incarnations, Berlin hosts many buildings that, instead of being torn down, are becoming interesting to urban explorers and those who are able to see beauty in decay and re-purposing.

The eastern-most part of former West Berlin was a drab neighborhood in the shadow of a looming wall. Turkish immigrants and squatting punks made up the majority, with a few artists and students thrown in for good measure. The fall of the Wall in 1989 relocated what was once almost a suburb back to right smack in the middle of Berlin, with the Spree river to it's East and the famous Museum Island to the north.
All along Oranienstrasse you can find small boutiques, all sorts of eateries, and a selection of galleries and specialty stores.+++
