Ignite Amsterdam #28

Wednesday May 29th: Food at 19.00 and talks at 20.30

29 May 2013

From snake hearts to artificial plants, traditional Japanese houses to 3D camouflage, and from reading to books: we're summoning the summer by presenting it with a dozen projects, ideas and insights. Dinner will be served at 19:00 and at 20:30 the first speaker kicks off. If you get your tickets in advance you'll save money and time at the door.

Ignite

Ignite is run by locals, for locals. Fast-paced and merciless, speakers get five minutes to present, making use of twenty slides that auto-advance every fifteen seconds. All presentations are given in English.

Speakers

Bowie Verschuuren
Bowie's work can best be described as a cross between film and photography. He is preoccupied with a cinematic way to tell stories in pictures, with scenes and allegories, characterized by strong compositions and a classical eye for detail.

Merel Karhof
Merel graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, and now runs her own design agency. Tonight she'll present some of her recent work, from everyday objects to a wind knitting factory.

Bjarke Jensen
Bjarke is a postdoc at the department of bioscience - zoophysiology at Aarhus University (Denmark). Drawing from his research on the evolution of hearts, from fish to man, tonight he'll talk with us about snake hearts.

Dennis Duijnhouwer
Dennis likes color. He has done photo series on bad graffiti, animal prints and more, and since 2006 he has been photographing every artificial plant or flower he comes across. Resulting in an exhibition at Galerie Bart at the end of April, and hopefully a book. Find out more about his obsession for not-so-real plants.

Tjitske Hemkes
In 2006 Tjitske graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. She is currently working on uniforms for an art festival at Soesterberg Air Base. Find out about this and other work tonight.

Peter de Krom
Peter has a keen eye for people. In series such as Stokstaartjes (men who pose naked in the dunes) and Voetstuk (men resting one foot on something elevated), his photographs display a combination of a reserved distance with what seems like a personal wish to come closer.

Cilia Erens
Formerly a town- and country planner, as a sound artist Cilia first introduced sound walks in the Netherlands back in 1987. She makes use of largely unmixed, everyday sounds, making space - and silence - audible.

Thomas Schmall
During a residency in Kyoto, Thomas became fascinated by the traditional wooden houses in the city, which are slowly disappearing. Find out why he started painting them.

Daan Heerma van Voss
In February of this year De Bezige Bij published Daan's novel De Vergeting, a book about a blackout (Transient Global Amnesia) Daan had had the previous year. The book features illustrations by David Wasch.

Jose Subero & Paula Colchero
Ruilbank is an artistic installation that promotes reading and exchange. The project is inspired by the custom of people leaving behind newspapers and books in trains and buses for other people to read. Jose and Paula will tell you more about the project, which will start some time late this summer.

Arthur Steenbrugge
Artist Arthur Steenbrugge presents the subconscious as the source of creativity in his work, but also as the boundary of self-knowledge. He is here to present his digital collages, also known as Parallel Worlds.

Joost Haas
Amsterdam-based artist Joost Haas is crazy about materials. Recently he made a boat out of paperbased sheet material. Find out how he keeps things floating.
