Workshop:

Workshop: Experimental Perfumery

Make your own Perfume

20 Sep 2018

Always wanted to learn how to make perfume, but didn't know where to start? In this 3 hour intensive workshop, you are guided in the important first steps of perfume blending. Learn about the history, modern industry, and contemporary experimental practices with scent. Get important knowledge about aromatic materials, lab safety, and spend time smelling (and discussing) a curated selection of molecules - and, most importantly, embark upon the first steps of becoming a perfumer.

Under IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown's helpful eyes, every participant is invited to select materials to work with, and will learn and blend their own perfumes. You go home with a spray bottle of your final perfume, a formula, and the confidence and basic knowledge to pursue scent-making as a creative practice.

Perfumery and Experimental Perfume Making

A trained nose smells more and knows what to do. By learning the basics, this workshop will leave you with the right knowledge and energy to pursue scent as a creative practice. Step by step, this workshop covers information on raw materials, molecules, dilutions, use of a scale, and altogether covers the basic strategies for perfume blending. After three hours, you leave with a bottle of your own made scent, while at the same time having gained knowledge about the perfume industry, scent as a creative practice and many more!

Saskia Wilson-Brown

Based in Los Angeles, Saskia Wilson-Brown is founder and director of the Institute for Art and Olfaction. In 2012, her interest in trans-media practices led her to create The Institute for Art and Olfaction, a non-profit devoted to experimentation and open access in scent. With the institute, she also initiated the Art and Olfaction Awards in 2013, an international awards mechanism for independent perfumers. Saskia's great expertise in perfumery and rich knowledge of the industry makes her the perfect guide for the first steps in independent and experimental perfume blending.

IAO and Art Olfaction Amsterdam

This workshop is part of Art Olfaction Amsterdam, a collaboration between Mediamatic and The Institute for Art and Olfaction, based in Los Angeles. One of the IAO goals is to provide an accessible and affordable education in their laboratory for the people who have traditionally not had access. They also support the art and perfume communities by advancing experimental practices through ongoing creative residency programs, community-minded events (Experimental Scent Summit, A.I.X. Scent Fair), and through the Art and Olfaction Awards.
