Motherwort

Leonurus cardiaca

Motherwort is a native of many parts of Europe. It is often found in country gardens, where it was formerly grown for medicinal purposes. When not in flower, it resembles Mugwort in habit.

Motherwort is especially valuable for the female reproductive system disorders (hence the name). It is known as a nourishing herb which can lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and cause uterine contractions. This means that if should not be taken by people with low blood pressure or by pregnant women. Motherwort is also known to calm the mind and relieve tension, this is most likely due to the blood pressure lowering effects. Some methods of intake might help reduce bleeding from childbirth, c-section and abortion surgery (more research is needed to confirm this).
