Leonurus cardiaca, or motherwort, is a perennial and part of the lamiaceae or labiatae family. It is most often found in gravelly soil and prefers sunlight or slight-shade. Motherwort blooms July - September.

As an herbal remedy motherwort has been used to calm the nervous system and promotes relaxation as opposed to drowsiness when used as a sedative. It can also be helpful in alleviating issues surrounding childbirth, menstruation, and menopause. The fresh or dried flowers can be used to flavour beer, as well as soups or stews (such as lentil or split pea). Additionally an olive-green dye can be extracted from the leaves.
