Workshop:

POSTPONED | Designing Incense

with Niklaus Mettler

28 Mar 2020

Incense can be used as an insect repellent, to mask a foul smell or as a way to connect with the divine. In fact, the word “incense” is derived from the Latin word for “to burn.” This workshop will help you design your own aroma composition and teach you how to use materials to make incense from scratch.

What you will do

In this workshop, you learn about Japanese incense making and you will get to add your own twist. After introducing the classical approach and the traditional precious aromatic materials often used in incense making, Niklaus Mettler will delve into less used and more local materials. He will then guide you to compose your own aromatic recipe for incense.

There will be a range of materials that you can use in the workshop but we invite participants to bring materials that will help create their personal blend. This can be gums, woods, flowers, spices, fruit-zest and anything that contains an interesting smell for you. Note that the materials you bring have to be completely dry in order for you to use them in the blend.
