Freezing Favela

A temporary city at Mediamatic Fabriek

1 Feb 2013
1 Sep 2013

A group of designers, cooks and other makers were sharing our huge, leaking, unheated space in the Van Gendthallen. This group together formed the Freezing Favela and started with weekly gatherings at the end of 2012, the so-called Slum Sessions. They started building the city in January of 2013 and in this way became citizens of it.

In the Freezing Favela you could make tosti's from scratch, bricks from old newspapers, furniture from cardboard, and cook with ingredients from the aquaponics farm. Favela-citizens gave workshops and organized events and meals. They worked autonomously together. There was a vodka distillery, you could take yoga- and cooking classes, or enjoy a glass of fresh milk from De Tostifabriek outside. Adventurous campers even had the option to spend the night in the Hot Love Nest, a one-bed-hotel on top of a compost pile and enjoy breakfast in the Favela's pop-up canteen, Favelous.

Erik Diekstra
