Design your own Shroud

with Susanne Duijvestein

25 Oct 2020

Have you ever thought about what you want to be wearing when you die? This autumn, we will breathe new life into an old Dutch tradition with a series of workshops. You will be guided in the process of making your own shroud by funeral director Susanne Duijvestein. We invite you to actively think about your passing and to start designing your own burial wear.

Susanne Duijvestein showing how to wrap a body in a Shroud - Filippo Iannone

What you will do

First, funeral director and Nature Morte curator Susanne Duijvestein will introduce you to the tradition of the burial shroud, including its meaning and practicalities.

You will create a death shroud from a natural fabric and you will treat this with herbs and other organic materials. The idea of this workshop is that you make a start with your shroud, and bring it back home to continue working on it.

Susanne Duijvestein

After eleven years in cooperative banking, Susanne Duijvestein switched into funeral business. Being young, progressive and independent, she reflects on the ethics and aesthetics in this world, but she also likes to reflect on how we relate to our own transience, what we eventually leave behind on this planet and how we can reclaim a non-commercial funeral culture again. Susanne is curator Nature Morte at Mediamatic.
