Workshop:

Scent Workshop KABK

An introduction to scent design

11 Oct 2018

On the 11th of October a group of Interactive Media Design students (KABK, The Hague) visited Mediamatic to attend a scent design workshop led by Spyros Drosopoulos.

The request arose from a collaboration with the department of geriatrics at the Slotervaart Hospital, where they currently research the relationship between memory & scent among geriatric patients. At Mediamatic, the group of students got an introduction to scent creation, in order to design scent workshops that trigger positive memories.

Spyros Drosopolous

In 2013 Spyros Drosopoulos developed his niche perfume line Baruti. His perfumes are often inspired by music, art, and nature. For example, for the Rijksmuseum he has carefully recreated Vemeer’s painting ‘Melksmeisje’ into a perfume that captures not just the environment of the painting but also the scent of the girl herself. He strives to push the boundaries of conventional perfumery without any limitations on creativity.

For Mediamatic, Spyros worked previously on Het Parfum. Het Parfum was a collaboration between Mediamatic, The Institute for Art and Olfaction, Play the City, and four other perfumers: Maki Ueda, Ricardo Moya, Niklaus Mettler, and Alessandro Gualtieri. Het Parfum was part of Uitmarkt 2018 and currently on display as an exhibition in Mediamatic.

Interactive Media Design (KABK)

Within a few years, rapidly developing technology has created radically new and complex human, social and cultural patterns of behaviour. Not only the media change, but the way they impact every aspect of our lives. The Bachelor Interactive/Media/Design of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) has responded to this situation by providing education for a new breed of design professionals, who can understand these complex changes, who call into question accepted norms, who analyse critically and creatively, and who can produce new kinds of interactive design solutions to meet the challenges of today and the future.
