Workshop:

Radical Embroidery

with Desirée Hammen

12 Mar 2022

Do you think embroidery is reserved to stitching flowers? Or that you can only embroider on fabric? In the last decades, embroidery has evolved from a traditionally feminine and domestic practice to a powerful tool of self-expression and empowerment, as well as a stepping stone to start deeper conversations.

Join fashion designer and artist Desiree Hammen in her practice of combining haute couture and DIY techniques and explore what radical embroidery can be; can we embroider on spoons, books or old furniture? And how about challenging norms and taboos through stitches?

What you will do

During this workshop, you will be guided by artist and fashion designer Desirée Hammen to create your own piece of radical embroidery. You will learn some basic stitches and techniques as well as engage with embroidery in its transformation as a craft, its subversive nature and explore how it can be used to bring forth taboos, uncomfortable topics and challenge social norms.

We believe embroidery can be radical through the theme and representation of the design, but also through the use of unusual material and experimental techniques. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to create and embroider on upcycled fabric, but also to incorporate a used object of your choice in your piece. We will provide fabric and small objects for you to (re)use, but you are welcome to bring your own materials, be it old clothes or personal items, that can be transformed using radical embroidery.
