The Aroma Lab Edition

Odorama 14 - with Klara Ravat, Peter Roessingh, Abel Jansma and RUIK

9 Mar 2017

How do we capture smell? Which different techniques exist to extract smells and what are their pro’s and con’s? This edition of Odorama was all about different techniques of distilling. We invited theoretical physicist Abel Jansma, olfactory artist Klara Ravat, the founders of RUIK and Peter Roessingh. This evening also marked the preview of our very own Aroma Lab for working with scent. Tickets / Facebook

During this Odorama we explored practices, techniques and tools for the olfactory artist. You were invited for an exclusive preview of the newly built Aroma Lab where you'll find equipment and gadgets ready to create new scent designs.

Klara Ravat

Klara has spent a year (2016/2017) in Amsterdam as artist-in-residence invited by VU university, Waag Society and Mediamatic. Klara creates media and odor artworks, installations and experimental films. By opposing the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, Ravat absorbs the tradition of remembrance art into daily practice. For the past years she has been developing works that relate to the sense of smell as a research on how we perceive through this sense. At the Aroma Lab she hosts a series of scented workshops, talks and other related fragranced activities.

dr. Peter Roessingh

What is a gas chromatography? Dr. Peter Roessingh from the University of Amsterdam explained us everything about the principle of gas chromatography, an analytical chemical method for separating chemical substances. This method can be used in analysing scents and specify their moleculair composition. Roessingh will introduce us to the principles and talk about how the gas chromatography is used in analysing biological components using insects!

Abel Jansma

Abel has been focusing on performing vacuum distillation for Mediamatic, meaning distillation under low pressures to conserve a richer spectrum of aromas. For traditional distillation the boiling points of elements can be too high and therefore destroying the complex, often fragile molecules that constitute flavors and odors in the process. With Vacuum Distilling this could be prevented and offer an interesting tool for creating a complex aroma.

RUIK

Boye and Noëlle are RUIK and create their own perfumes without chemicals on an organic basis. For their first perfume VERSCHIL they made a design based on their childhood memory of the smell of orange peels. Nowadays huge amounts of orange peels are thrown away, and RUIK uses part of this organic material that would have gone to waste otherwise as the basis for their perfume. Furthermore, they also turn the peels into paper using it for the packaging.
