Workshop:

Smelling Like Another Being

with Frank Bloem

12 Aug 2022

Can we raise awareness for the diversity of species in our ecosystem by smelling? In this workshop we explore the amazing smells that our natural world is rich in by translating the odour of animals, insects, plants and bacteria into a perfume for humans.

Smelling like of coral reef in the ocean, a field with wild flowers, or an endangered rhino? It's all possible! Learn to combine scents from our extensive library to make a species perfume and spread the smell!

Toys for Animals in Zoos - A project by Odorama guest speaker Thijs de Zeeuw Landscape designer Thijs de Zeeuw , designs living spaces for animals in zoos. In odorama 40 he comes to give a lecture about the playing animal. How do animals play? and what role do scents play therein?

With:

In Mediamatic’s current project inhuman carnaval we are looking to raise awareness for biodiversity of our planet, by creating costumes and dressing up as other species. Though, embodying another species is not only a matter of sight. During this workshop with resident perfumer Frank Bloem, we explore how to disguise ourselves through scent and smelling.

What you will do

In this workshop you will explore scents of other species, be that animals, plants, fungi, minerals, or even bacteria! You will learn about the composition of perfumes using the vast range of scents in our open scent library. By mixing top, middle and base notes, you will compose your own 10 ml perfume to bring home. By the end of the workshop, you will have theoretical knowledge on the principles of perfuming, and you will bring home a smell that unlocks wonderful memories and discussions about the other species around us.

Frank Bloem

Frank Bloem is an artist who uses scent as his primary medium. He studied Fine Arts at the Rietveld Academy. In the summer of 2016, Frank changed his focus from visual art to olfactory-based works and started The Snifferoo. This perfume laboratory is a place for education and experiments around scent. He made several personalized perfumes, hosts regular workshops, and has recreated the elephant smell of Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo.

Inhuman Carnaval

In this ongoing program we practice letting go of anthropocentric thinking and celebrate biodiversity by dressing up as non-human species. The program includes workshops, exhibitions, performances, film screenings, lectures, parties and more.
