Hier vind je een selectie van onze projecten van de afgelopen 4 jaar. En een kleine impressie van belangrijke en grote projecten van de afgelopen 40 jaar.

Mediamatic is opgericht uit nieuwsgierigheid naar nieuwe mogelijkheden voor de kunsten en uit noodzaak voor onderlinge ondersteuning bij het verkennen daarvan. We werken op het snijvlak tussen kunst, ontwerp en wetenschap en we bieden ruimte voor innovatief, belichaamd en artistiek onderzoek.

We leren van en met kunstenaars, ontwerpers, wetenschappers, elkaar en publiek. Iedereen mag mee doen en mee leren tijdens workshops, ontmoetingen, evenementen of in een van onze laboratoria.

De jaren 2020 - 2024

In de periode 2020-2024 onderzoeken we samen met kunstenaars, ontwerpers en wetenschappers de overbelasting van de mens en de aarde. We zijn geïnteresseerd in hoe we moeten omgaan met de fors toenemende prikkels in de samenleving, en leren daarover van en met neurodivergentie makers. We onderzoeken de aarde en hoe we beter met haar kunnen samenleven. En we onderzoeken waarom we sommige soorten wél waarderen, maar andere soorten massaal uitroeien. 

Duiventorens 

Kunnen we verval leren omarmen? Sinds 2020 bouwt Arne Hendriks duiventorens van mycelium. Er is een diverse reeks torens opgeschoten rondom de Biotoop van Mediamatic. De mycelium-waste-pigeon-towers zijn het resultaat van een voortdurend proces: waarbij het bederven van het bouwmateriaal is een essentieel onderdeel van dit ontwerpproces.

29-09-2023 deelnemers dansen op mycelium - Gentle Disco - Arne Hendriks Arne Hendriks maakt levende duiventorens van de afvalstromen van de paddenstoelenkweek. Na twee keer paddenstoelen oogsten is het mycelium (de wortelstructuren van de schimmels) niet meer vruchtbaar genoeg voor de kwekerij, maar voor de torens is het materiaal perfect. De Gentle Disco is een collectief dansritueel waar we samen met deelnemers en voorbijgangers het mycelium eren en platstampen met onze voeten. 22-04-2022 - Arne Hendriks kijkt in zijn duiventoren - Duiventorens - Arne Hendriks De duiventorens zijn een doorlopend experiment om te bouwen met levend myceliumafval van oesterzwammenkwekerijen. Het project onderzoekt vragen als: Kunnen we structuren bouwen om wilde duiven te huisvesten? Wat is het beste ontwerp om een toren met mycelium te bouwen? En hoe lang duurt het voordat de stenen aan elkaar groeien? Door te experimenteren met verschillende vormen en bouwstructuren zien we hoe het materiaal reageert en of we een comfortabele leefruimte voor onze Amsterdamse duiven…

Lief je Gast: Japanse Duizendknoop

Welke planten mag je zomaar doden? En welke planten niet? De Japanse Duizendknoop wordt gezien als vijand, mag overal in Europa op agressieve wijze worden uitgeroeid en we noemen hem een ‘invasieve exoot’.  Door globalisering en de versnelde klimaatverandering, is de biodiversiteit erg veranderd. We moeten als mens kritisch nadenken over de manier waarop we omgaan met deze verandering en onze rol hierin. Moeten we de lokale biodiversiteit koste wat het kost beschermen en zo ja, op welke manier? Of kunnen we manieren vinden om de veranderingen te ondersteunen, en te helpen met het vinden van een nieuwe balans? 

We zijn in 2023 begonnen met een jaarlijks Japanse Duizendknoop Festival, waar we deze vragen stellen. Samen met kunstenaars en ontwerpers zoeken we naar alternatieven voor de harde confrontatie die veel groenbeheerders nu kiezen. Kunnen we deze ‘plaag’ weg-eten? Kunnen we hem in toom houden door hem te foerageren en te gebruiken als basis voor nieuwe, duurzame, materialen? En kunnen we andere manieren ontdekken die kunnen helpen bij het in evenwicht brengen van de huidige Nederlandse biodiversiteit waar de Japanse Duizendknoop een deel van is?

14-04-2023 The Dog Chased its Tail To Bite it Off - by Alaa Abu Asad Op onze aarde, waar 'inheems' een zeldzame status is, vraagt Palestijnse kunstenaar Alaa Abu Asad zich af welke botanische soorten kunnen worden erkend als rechtmatige inwoners van natiestaten. Terwijl anderen soorten juist voor altijd worden neergezet als vreemdeling. 22-04-2023 Deelnemers gebruiken de japanse duizendknoop als biomateriaal - Remaking Knotweed - Virgile Durando Workshop Tijdens deze workshop leerden deelnemers hands-on technieken die je kunt toepassen op de Japanse duizendknoop. Ze gingen aan de slag met zelfgemaakte gereedschappen van Virgile Durando. Samen met de kunstenaar konden deelnemers onderzoeken hoe je met deze veelzijdige plant iets moois kunt creëren door te weven en bouwen. Justin Knelange

14-04-2023 Handboek Japanse Duizendknoop van Virgile Durando - Deze publicatie is onderdeel van het Japanse Duizendknoop Festival Het Handboek van ontwerper Virgile Durando is een uitgebreide en visuele handleiding voor alle makers die geïnteresseerd zijn in het leren van bouwtechnieken en het bewerken van de Japanse duizendknoop als materiaal. Eerste oefeningen tot ecocentrisme

We zijn niet de enige op de aarde en we voelen de toenemende noodzaak om niet de mens als middelpunt van de Aarde te zien, maar het hele ecosysteem - waar de mens een onderdeel van is. Samen met kunstenaars, wetenschappers en ontwerpers oefenden we om ecocentrischer te worden. Tijdens de Dutch Design Week presenteerden we  het grote project Inhuman Carnaval, waar we kunstenaars, ontwerpers, makers en publiek uitnodigen om zichzelf en elkaar te verkleden als de mooie soorten die ons ecosysteem rijk is. Op die manier probeerden we samen om het menselijk perspectief te verwisselen voor een ecocentrisch perspectief. Het project vierde het ecosysteem via lezingen, performances, workshops en tentoonstellingen.

We ontwikkelden daarnaast een diner dat zowel voor honden als voor mensen was, dat we samen met filosofe en schrijfster Eva Meijer ontwikkelden. Kunstenaar Anne Hofstra presenteerde hier haar voorstelling voor kippen en resident Mari Bastashevski maakte het virtual reality werk Pending Xenophora waarin je samen kon leven met slakken. Madeline Swartzchman experimenteert met hybride plant-mensen in Face Nature.

En we organiseerden een museumnacht over onze meest ondergewaardeerde stadsgenoot: De Duif.

Duif Photobooth - als Duif tijdens Museumnacht '22 Museumnacht op 5 november 2022 was bij Mediamatic gewijd aan de duif in al haar heerlijkheid en pracht. Samen met Arne Hendriks, Pauline Wiersma, Circus Andersom en vele anderen maakte ons team een wervelende avond waar een aantal van onze doorlopende thema's extra aandacht kregen op feestelijke wijze.

Neo Futurist Dinners

In de serie Neo Futurist Dinner nodigt Mediamatic verschillende kunstenaars en koks uit om hun visie op het eten van de toekomst te onderzoeken. In deze diners bevragen kunstenaars, ontwerpers en koks de manier waarop voedsel, kunst, wetenschap en politiek met elkaar verweven zijn.

Zo presenteerden Alice Herón en Margherita Soldati tijdens de corona tijd Skin Hunger, over het belang van aanraking. We onderzochten samen met Lelani Lewis de geschiedenis van Carabische keuken en het effect van (koloniale) handelsroutes op eten in Code Noir. We onderzochten middeleeuwse medische, magische en culinaire manuscripten in the Sin Eaters en onderzochten met Philipp Kollman en Suzanne Bernhardt hoe met de tijd onze relatie tot de grond is veranderd in Ears of Earth. Martin Butler en Alice Herón daagden ons uit om onze melancholie op te eten in Dinner of The Damned

18-10-2023 Deelnemers eten het 5-gangen diner over melancholie - Dinner of The Damned - Martin Butler, Alice Héron, I-Chen Zuffellato Regisseur Martin Butler, kunstenaar/kok Alice Héron, performer I-Chen onderzochten via een 5-gangen diner hoe we onze melancholie kunnen omarmen, de duisternis in kunnen duiken en innerlijke rust te ontdekken. Dit veganistische 5-gangendiner combineert traditionele en onconventionele kennis, kruidenwijsheden en remedies van over de hele wereld. The Dinner of the Damned' bevat ingrediënten die bekend staan om hun stemmingsverbeterende eigenschappen en helende rouwrituelen. Martin en Alice nemen… Justin Knelange

We zijn geïnteresseerd in menselijke eigenaardigheden en obsessieve aandacht, omdat anders-zijn en anders-denken een belangrijke factor is van vernieuwing en noodzakelijk in de kunsten. We zijn daarom begonnen met onderzoek naar het artistiek potentieel van neurodivergenten. 

Via residenties, onderzoek, samenwerkingen, workshops, twee-maandelijks lezingen, een Museumnacht en verschillende exposities leren we steeds meer over hoe we kunnen leren van neurodiversiteit en hoe we neurodivergente makers beter kunnen ondersteunen.

4-11-2023: Publiek beslist: Hoarder of Curator? - '11 collecties' Pet van de Luijtgaarden tijdens Museumnacht Wat Denk Je Zelf? Pet verzamelt verzamelingen, op het dwangmatige af. Al deze verzamelingen worden nauwkeurig gesorteerd en gegroepeerd. Pet toont elf van deze verzamelingen in onze kleine kassen aan het water, zo onthult elke kas weer een nieuwe wereld. Van telefoonkaarten tot ‘traditioneel’ meisjes- en jongensspeelgoed. Hiermee toont hij ook onze intieme relatie met dingen en hoe deze onze identiteit kunnen vormgeven. Romy Kerkman

4-11-2023 Klei performance tijdens de museumnacht - My Shadow is Part of my Body - Minjoo Choi Minjoo gooit met klei, ze gooit klei tegen de muren, ze gooit klei tegen de ramen, en de klei valt, de klei droogt, de klei wordt weer opgepakt en gekneed tot zij weer geworpen wordt. Met deze eenvoudige repetitieve handeling opent en ontsluit zij zichzelf. Ze lijkt te denken en te voelen door te gooien. Is ze ontstemd? Of is de herhaling van het gooien een meditatieve oefening? 4-11-2023 Het publiek lacht voor geld - Smile Like You Really Mean It - Ignacy Radtke /Museumnacht 2023 "Smile Like You Really Mean It!" is een onderzoek naar emotionele arbeid. Die is het meest voor de hand liggend in de dienstensector, maar niet alleen daar!  In deze replica wordt de glimlach in een emotieloze realiteit geplaatst waar het een handelswaar wordt, niet anders dan aluminium, tarwe of goud - ontmenselijkt en deel van een groter systeem. De basisprijs voor een minuut glimlachen is €1,00, maar de waarde ervan fluctueert op de aandelenmarkt.

04-11-2023 Deelnemers maken lappenpoppen - Transformatieve Lappenpop workshop - Jam van der Aa / Museumnacht 2023 In deze workshop creëerden deelnemers kleine transformatieve lappenpoppen, die bekendstaan als 'poppets', met de bedoeling positieve verandering en genezing teweeg te brengen. Deze creatieve en introspectieve activiteit is ontworpen om persoonlijke relaties, emoties en verlangens naar verandering te verkennen via de kunst van het poppen maken. De nadruk ligt op het gebruik van imitatieve magie voor het goede en persoonlijke groei, eerder dan het uitspreken van spreuken of vervloekingen. Romy Kerkman

01-10-2019 Handsieraad dat neurodivergente prikkels imiteert - Precious Burden - Asefeh Tayebani Een mentale handicap is  niet zichtbaar. Dat maakt het moeilijk om uit te leggen hoe het is om een zo'n handicap te hebben. En dat terwijl het juist voor mensen met een neurologische aandoening ontzettend belangrijk is dat ze hun – soms net wat afwijkende – behoeften kunnen communiceren. Asefeh Tayebani, zelf gediagnostiseerd met autisme, creëerde Precious Burden : drie voorwerpen die het publiek in staat stellen om te ervaren hoe het is om autistisch te zijn. Kunst in tijden van crisis en oorlog

Corona veranderde onze plannen. We hebben veel omgedacht. Mooie voorbeelden zijn de Serres Separées, waar mensen zonder besmettingsgevaar toch konden dineren en Penny for Your Thoughts: een programma waar we makers beloonden voor het delen van hun plannen. Hierdoor bleven we kunstenaars stimuleren en ondersteunen. Maar de mondiale crisis stopte niet met corona. We presenteerden, voor de oorlog tussen Palestina en Israël formeel uitbrak, Border Ecologies, een project van Foundation for Achieving Seamless Territory en de Qudaih family over een kleine boerderij in de Gazastrook die keer op keer wordt aangevallen en vernietigd door Isralische luchtaanvallen, maar blijft verzetten. Toen de oorlog in Oekraïne uitbrak starten we het project Knitting for Survival, waar iedereen welkom was om verhalen uit te wisselen over het conflict tijdens gezamenlijk protest-breien en we presenteerden we Growing Gunya: een onderzoek naar traditionele oekraïense jassen van Oekraïense kunstenaars Dasha Tsapenko, Ruslana Goncharuk en Amsterdamse kunstenaar Marjo van Schaik. Samen met Desiree Hammen onderzochten we hoe borduren een manier kan zijn van verzet in de workshop Radical Embroidery.

17-12-2022 Growing Gunya - Gunya is een traditionele wollen jas uit Oekraïne die oorspronkelijk gedragen werd door Hutsul herders in de Karpaten. Door de jaren heen heeft de jas een diepe symbolische betekenis gekregen, waarbij de jas als amulet dient voor de eigenaren. Met de klassieke herdersjas als sjabloon, vertelt 'Growing Gunya' verhalen over lokale materialen, natuurlijke componenten en levende organismen. Participants during Knitting for Survival - In our Knitting for Survival sessions, we learn how to make our own warm items as an alternative way to stay warm without giving any gas money to Putin. We stand in solidarity with Ukraine and have decided to turn our gas heaters down, so we are learning how to knit guided by volunteer textile artists and designers in this series of free workshops.  Ilya Rabinovich

Mens, genot & identiteit

We vierden de mens in al haar facetten. Tijdens Museumnacht organiseerden Ine Poppe en Olga Middendorp een ode aan vrouwelijk genot tijdens het Beftival. We onderzochten samen met drag clown Taka Taka en mode ontwerpster Nikki Millioni hoe kleding en make-up gebruikt kunnen worden om je uit te drukken. En Isaac Monte ontwierp de protheses van de toekomst: welke extra organen kunnen bedenken voor mensen?

Maar onze intieme zintuigen zijn juist heel belangrijk in onze relatie tot onszelf en de natuur. Samen met kunstenaars en wetenschappers zoeken we juist naar manieren om de intieme zintuigen bij ons gezamenlijk onderzoek te betrekken. We organiseerden verschillende Odorama's: lezingen waar we kunst, ontwerp en de intieme zintuigen centraal zetten en hebben een groot laboratorium waar kunstenaars en publiek kan werken met geur. Onze keuken dient als smaak-laboratorium.

Foraging for mental health participants exploring yarrow - Yarrow, or Achillea millefolium, is an   edible plant with medicinal properties. In the Middle Ages it was thought to have subtle powers for wounds and help with mitigating fevers.   Yarrow Tea is a good remedy for severe colds, being most useful in the commencement of fevers. Some of i ts old names such as Soldier's Wound Wort and Knight's Milfoil testify to its reputation as a vulnerary. Grote thema's zoal de dood en de liefde werden in samenwerking met zowel jonge opkomende als gevestigde namen onderzocht en verkend. In samenwerking met verschillende chefs hebben we de mogelijkheden van hoe we voedsel tot ons nemen geëxploreerd en we gingen slimmer om met tekorten en overschotten.

With a soundscape sounding through every room, guests could have a 15 minute one-on-one with artist Irina Birger, take a selfie in a coffin or design a death shroud. Guests could also win a relaxing facial treatment with a death mask as the result.

18-09-2015 Hard Water by Zeger Reyers - In an ultimate combination of man and nature (or perhaps man versus nature), Zeger Reyers has created an enormous living art installation that climbs down from the exterior second floor level of the Mediamatic Biotoop building in Dijkspark into the Mediamatic Restaurant. Hard Water was constructed using over 1000 ceramic plates, soil and different species of grass, including Gaura and Crocosmia. This makes up half of the Clean Lab space. The fruiting bodies of magic mushrooms have been illegal in Holland since 2007, however, the spores are not. 01-06-2013 Pretty Nice Stuff explaining there project - Freezing Favela - Freezing Favela is a temporary city in the Mediamatic Factory. Designers, cooks, and other makers have taken up a part of this space. In the Favela you can make sandwiches from scratch, make furniture out of cardboard, make artworks out of garbage and cook with ingredients from the aquaponics farm. The citizens of Freezing Favela give workshops and organize events and meals. 29-06-2012 De Diesel Kantine - At the opening of De Etende Mens (2012) in the Designhuis in Eindhoven, João Negro processes old deep-frying fat (local fat) into soap and biodiesel. The soap is perfumed with herbs from the aquaponics culture. You wash your hands with it before eating and cooking and after defecating. They included information such as their name, and the location they visited before coming to Mediamatic. 22-04-2011 Is this Your House? - Parool - As part of Pièce de Résistance, an exhibition on forms and stories of resistance, we made a special 4th and 5th May supplement for the Parool. Release date 22 April 2011. In the appendix, residents of Amsterdam could visit a list of houses from which Jewish families were deported during the Second World War. If the house was found, the current residents could take a picture of the house, upload it on the website of the Jewish Monument and hang it at Mediamatic.

The collection of old and new games consisted of interactive installations, arcade video games, computer games and handhelds. Arcade is a growing collection of old and new games, consisting of 5 levels. The collection included two brand new games, which could be played at Mediamatic for the first time. During The Cosplay Show Mediamatic organized an exhibition of forty of the best Dutch cosplay costumes on her ground floor gallery of the Post CS building. 30-10-2005 Food Facility by Marti Guixé - Mediamatic Exhibition 2005 at Mediamatic Tentoonstelling, Mediamatic Post CS, 30 October - 11 December 2005 30 October - 11 December 2005. Food Facility was a prototype restaurant of Marti Guixé. Instead of a central kitchen, the restaurant was connected to existing take-out restaurants in the area. Visitors could visit the Food Advisor for tips. By negotiating a bit with other guests it was possible to eat Tom Ka Ka as a starter, then spareribs as main course and Tiramisu as dessert. Mediamatic Magazine Archief - Mediamatic published paper journals from 1985 to 1999. The magazine was a platform for discussions on media, art and television. With Mediamatic Off-line Mediamatic continued to irregularly publish CD-ROM collections and DVD projects after the last paper magazine. After 9 volumes of each (about) 4 issues it ended to make a restart as Mediamatic Off-Line in the 21st century. All issues can be found here.
